GeorgTintnerisbestknowntomusicloversforhisstunninginterpretationsofBruckner’ssymphoniesrecordedbyNaxosinthe1990s.Hewasamanwholivedandbreathedmusic.Blessedwithperfectpitch,attheageofninehewasthefirstJewtojointheViennaBoys’Choir.Later,hebecameimmersedintheconcertlifeofthecity,rubbingshoulderswithBerg,Schoenberg,andWebern,andobservingthegreatconductorsoftheage.Butbythelate1930sTintnerhadtofleeandheeventuallylandedinAuckland,NewZealand.Therecouldhavebeennogreatercontrastforthisgiftedyoungmusician,yethestartedanewlifetherebeforemovingontoAustraliaand,muchlater,toCanada.Tintner’sthirdwifeandwidow,Tanya,hasdocumentedthelifeofthisuncompromisingmanandtheresultisarevealingwindowontotheartistictemperamentfromthepersonclosesttohim.OutofTimeisamust-readforeveryonewhobelievesinthedisciplinethatexcellenceintheartsdemands-andthepurejoyitcanbring.
